Geoff Baker
The man behind it all
The GB Guitars Story
Meet the Builder — Geoff Baker
GB Guitars began the way most good things do: with time, curiosity, and a shed full of tools.
Geoff Baker started building guitars in 2009 in Mount Isa, working out of a friend’s workshop. At the time, he wasn’t chasing a business , he was chasing understanding. A close friend, Heiner Schulz, had just returned from a guitar-building course in Melbourne, and together they set up a small workshop. With Heiner’s guidance, a stack of course notes and DVDs, and plenty of trial and error, Geoff built his first guitar by hand.
Not long after, Geoff’s wife surprised him with a 40th birthday gift that changed everything: a month at a guitar-building school in Italy. Surrounded by old traditions, patient craftsmanship, and generations of knowledge, the path ahead became clear. When the time came to step away from his building career, guitar making would take its place.
Over the years, Geoff has learnt that the real magic lives in the details. How one timber speaks differently to another. How a small change in setup can completely transform the way a guitar feels in someone’s hands. Every build is guided by the player their touch, their sound, and the way they connect with the instrument.
One of Geoff’s proudest moments came when he saw a professional musician play one of his guitars live for the first time. Hearing a guitar he built out in the world, doing what it was made to do, was deeply affirming.
Today, Geoff works exclusively with Australian timbers, sourcing all of his wood through Australian Guitar Timbers. Each piece carries a story of where it grew, how it lived, and how it found its way into a guitar.
GB Guitars isn’t about volume or shortcuts. It’s about honest work, good timber, and building guitars that feel right the moment you pick them up.
